An autopsy case of chronic myelocytic leukemia with a widespread myeloid metaplasia
was presented in a 13 months old Korean boy who was admitted to the hospital
because of abdominal distension, fever and gum bleeding, and died three days after. The
peripheral blood examination showed; RBC 3.05 m/mm3, Hgb. 11.6 gm/dl,
and WBC 190,000/mm3 with many normoblasts. At autopsy he showed
typical picture of chronic myelocytic leukemia involving bone marrow, liver, spleen,
lymphnodes and kidneys. After microscopy he was diagnosed as chronic myelocytic
leukemia with acute exacerbation. In addition to these findings, this case also revealed a
rather massive and widespread extramedullary hemopoiesis, examplified by numerous red
cell precursors and megakaryocytes in liver, spleen, lymphnodes, kidneys and testes.
